release date: 7/2009 by soulseduction | |
Roll of the Beast is Clyde’s reluctant incursion into the ‘protest song’, if you like, spawned simply from his frustration at the relentless bloodshed throughout the Middle East, exacerbated by the US, UK and Israel since the dawning of the new century. The particular event was a horrendous Israeli shelling of a Palestinian wedding party which can only have been ordered and executed by a force very close to the human perception of Satan, or ‘The Beast’. The title was coined and the lyrical content satisfied. All that was remaining was for Clyde to formulate an equally stirring soundtrack. The original is a loose, live, infectiously catchy house monster with a gratifying slap bass-line sitting satisfyingly under an enticing, ‘stabby’ Rhodes hook. Clyde drops his own ill-tempered falsetto vocals on top, quite literally ‘getting it off is chest’. Atjazz turns up the heat with one of his most impressive remixes to date. This tuff beauty ebbs towards the boundaries of the more broken side of house. Taking the baton with the original hook, he turns up the energy, taking it to the next level with live Rhodes, a remorseless beat, dressed with the superlative quality you’d expect from one of this mans productions. Forward-looking and emerging talent, Christo, bestows two seriously dope mixes. His ‘So Much Bounce Remix’ transcends any of today’s pigeon holes, sitting in its own, deep, involving, head nodding kingdom. His vocal dub delves deeper, darker and Detroit-esque. Superb. Liverpool’s Tim Scott (Sick Trumpet) supplies us with his ‘Roll of the Beats Remix’ and have no qualms, this is a Broken Beat tour de force, heavy on the bass. > product detail

Palov & Mishkin: The Infamous duo and re edit extraordinaire are bombing the soul out of you with their first album release on Cast-a-blast, following a highly acclaimed compilation “ Backslam Extravaganza” and a series of E.P’s for labels like Gamm, Resence, Scribble, Rebtuz and remixes for The Hot 8 brass band and Lovemonk’s Mas Achili funk. “Think Twice” selectively combines heavy guitar funk, north American flavors, block breaks and exotic soul with tropicalismo in a playful mash down of styles and genres that characterize the Palov & Mishkin sound. This album is made for the selective and open minded music heads and dj’s. All tracks been tested by the Cast-a-blast crew in order to bring to you those perfect dancefloor breaks you need plus a bonus remix from TM Juke at the end can even make your aunt shake. Palov & Mishkin experiment with past elements constantly adding them to the future and most tunes are embracing a‘60s and ‘70s atmosphere and a vintage feeling. As Palov explains: “...this album is an example of how interesting it can be to bring about the worlds and personal aesthetics in things.” …and Mishkin agrees. Quotes: “I it like when you have your firm , your sound , your personnality and P&M have this , i feel that !!! It remind me the energy from the Cali' golden age hip-hop like Jurrasic 5 ...but from Greece !!” GUTS (WAX ON RECORDS) “Like this. Will definitely support on radio and dj sets.” Rob Luis (TRU-THOUGHTS) “Sample fever, fat beats, funky basslines.a blast with a hint from the past!!!!” DJ Wicked (REPUBLIC RADIO) “Great tracks... love the crazy samples! Will support this one … for sure!” Menno (sound of swound) “Music for the dancefloor(!!!) from Palov & Mishkin, the re-edit, mash-up duo from Athens, Greece!I've been always been a fan of their Latin breaks! They'll groove your day!!!” Lee Cherry > product detail

Cookin' On 3 Burners are Australia's foremost organ trio joining the dots between funk, soul, boogaloo & jazz. Long time partners Lance Ferguson (guitar), Ivan Khatchoyan (drums) and Jake Mason (organ) have taken their home brew of soulful Hammond get down everywhere from jazz festivals to after hours bars and clubs. Their top notch reputation led to them supporting Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings in Sydney, jamming live with Breakestra and becoming THE in demand band south of the equator. With a musical CV that includes names like Joe Bataan, Alice Russell, Mark de Clive-Lowe and The Quantic Soul Orchestra, as well as the world beating outfit The Bamboos, it's not surprising this latest CO3B album has generated huge interest even prior to its' release.Their first Freestyle album 'Baked, Broiled or Fried' featured the group in a hardcore funk groove but on 'Soul Messin' sees the sound, feel and influences widened further with some quite magical results. Versatile singer Kylie Auldist (Tru Thoughts Recordings) opens proceedings on the deep funk groove of 'Push It Up' but it is the Freestyle 45 'This Girl' (FSR7057) that provides the mellow, beautiful and incredibly catchy vocal highlight of the entire collection, shimmering horns ride over this laid back, future deep soul classic. We don't yet know what Gary Numan will make of CO3B's version of his 80's synth pop hit 'Cars' but Jake Masons organ playing (including simultaneously supplying the super funky bass lines via his Hammond foot pedals and left hand) takes this track in a direction no one was expecting!Drummer and top notch singer Fallon Williams provides his gritty, searing voice on 'Hole In My Pocket' and 'Seen Through Your Disguise' sounding very much like US soul legend Robert Moore and the band display their versatility whilst doffing their caps in the direction of The Meters on the numbers 'Dog Wash' and 'Piranha' The down tempo, moody album closer 'The Proving Grounds' once again shows the groups expanding musical textures and rounds off 'Soul Messin' the bands most varied and accomplished recording so far.Cookin' On 3 Burners will be embarking on a promotional European tour in September 2009 featuring Kylie Auldist, these will be shows not to be missed so don't say we didn't warn you! > product detail

Permanent Vacation are delighted to bring you the second chapter of the first Space Oddities saga compiled by Alexis Le-Tan (music journalist and member of the Tigersushi Bass System) and Jess (formerly of the famed French house duo Jess & Crabbe and now drummer for punk band 10lec6). The pair met in 2001 through a mutual love of no-wave and leftfield disco. In 2003 Jess came upon a big collection of Library music, which he bought for next to nothing. Whilst he was ciphering through it and finding the most interesting extracts, Alexis was digging in all things Cosmic, where along the way he also started to pick up many bits and pieces of obscure mood musics. In 2007, they put together some of their best space disco treasures giving birth to the highly acclaimed Space Oddities project released last July. As the first episode of Space Oddities was reaching to an end and following the amazing feedback they received, the Parisian duo started working on the next volume in the heat of 2008’s sunny days. A new direction was chosen: more organic, guitar lead and psychedelic than the previous one, still focusing on the dancefloor and their love for freaky synths and fierce beats. Although it’s only been a year since their first instalment, it literally feels like a decade has gone by for them to finally complete Vol.2. The licensing of all this new material was definitely no joke! It was all worth it though, and their efforts were rewarded in many respect as they managed to clear all the tracks and on top of that convince two of the greatest authorities on library music to write the sleevenotes: Joel Martin (Quiet Village) and Gareth Goddard (Cherrystones/Godsy) - who’s words can be read below. Artwork comes courtesy of Parisian illustrator Sanghon Kim who created the perfect twisted package to this fantastic compilation. Last but not least, Vol. 2 will instantly become more collectible than the first one, as Permanent Vacation have broken the bank to supply us with a limited edition Gatefold lp. Grab them whilst you can, they won’t be around for long! « Library music? For years overlooked now coveted by a small closely-knit trinity of obsessive retroactive vinyl purists seeking inspiration from cues, bridges, segues and more importantly non-commercially available soundtrack fodder. Over the last few years there have been many compilations serving to fulfil (?) or create a satisfying overview of a global wealth of un-heard (to the general public) library musics which have been left to be discovered and revisited by collectors. Sadly there are those who via trying to make a fast buck miss the target whether it be by sequence or selection or plainly by money being the driving force/motivation, the people who truly love, feel & curate these pieces such as Alexis & Jess show their skills in the compilation you are now holding, consider the trappings of the idiom and listen to how some visions of the past can transcend their time and have the longevity to be FUTURISTIC years later. Who isn’t familiar with those legendary films and TV shows from the 60s and 70s such as „Breakfast at Tiffany’s“, „The Thomas Crown Affair“, „Bullitt“, “UFO“ or “Columbo”. In addition to their bodacious design, legendary actors and just plain coolness, these films have something else in common too: their unforgettable music! The 17 piece orchestra “Velvet Elevator” was founded by Martin Ptak and Heinz Fallmann. Their mission is to retrieve those sounds from the past and bring them back to the present and follow in the steps of orchestra greats such as Henry Mancini, Les Baxter, Hugo Montenegro or Percy Faith. The cinematic and danceable arrangements on “At The Movies” cover a range of styles from 1970s American car-chase scenes to Bossa Nova, Funk, Cha Cha and Jazz. Well known melodies such as “Fly Me To The Moon“ and “The Windmills Of Your Mind“ were arranged by Martin Ptak and Heinz Fallmann especially for Velvet Elevator and the vocals are interpreted by the charming singer Carolin de Rooij. > product detail

Just when you thought the Swedish invasion was over, Do Right! Music is thrilled to present the QUIET NIGHTS ORCHESTRA, yet another awesome export from the stoopidly diverse Stockholm scene. Don't be fooled by the QNO's placid sounding handle, there's nothing stodgy about these eight bold souls -- led by trombone titan Peter Fredriksson and featuring the seductively swoopingvoice of Sophie Norling -- are among the hottest young jazz talents in Scandinavia. Now they're poised to take on the world. The QNO's astonishingly tight Chapter One debut combines the sophisticated swing of a classic Blue Note set with the cool precision and propulsive grooves that exemplify the very best of the Nordic jazz tradition. But this creative crew isn't stuck in the past. The QNO's club ready joints, like their Latinesque heater The Search, and their modalicious Helsinki (recently given a broken beat retouch by Nils Krogh), are already getting spins from tastemaking selectas like BBC ace Gilles Peterson, dancefloor don Nicola Conte and Belgium's DJ Nova from Beyondjazz who know a good thing when they hear it. ‚In times of fast changes we all need moments to stop for a second and reflect what’s left inside nebst to work, eating and working more. ’Reflections’ , a deep and vibrant piece of art sung by Oezlem and produced by David Jones, well known as Zed Bias and Maddslinky, is a soulful retro-ish grown album. Oezlem, very known for all kind of collaborations with Dj’s from the House, Electro and Triphop scene for many years, dropped out a different part of her inner world for you to listen. Its a story of a woman split between the worlds of pain and happiness, time and space, fun and the more serious things in life. As simple and reduced some of the songs may seem, the effects some of those compositions leave are deeper than what’s on the surface. Enjoy! > product detail

Bauchklang is back with two new albums Austrian vocal acrobats Bauchklang (meaning "gut sound") have already received international accolades for their unique genre-crossing sound, created without using any instruments other than their voices. Which makes Bauchklang the epitome of a live band, and an unforgettable experience for audiences after they have overcome the initial surprise. The stunning mixture of Electro, Dub, and Hip-Hop not only earned Bauchklang two "Amadeus Awards" (the alpine version of a Grammy) at home, but travelled well abroad. With just their microphones to bring, they became regulars at the most prestigious European music festivals, and now can boast with fan communities in over 20 countries, including diverse places like Canada and India. Four years after their last album release, the self-professed "vocal groove collective" now emerges tightened to five members, audibly ripened, and with two new releases ready. Which marks the launch of a new phase of Bauchklang going global, including a fresh web platform, new collaborations with artists around the world, and an international film project. What started in January 2008 with the first Indian live appearance of an Austrian band completely unknown, and in a newly opened club in Mumbai, just a year later culminated in three sold out nights at what had become India's premiere live-venue: Bauchklang live at the Bluefrog club. Bauchklang first live-album ever, "Live In Mumbai", features a selection of songs performed on these six nights, including the new track "Signs" - a first taste of the like-titled upcoming studio album - and guest appearances of gifted young Indian singer Shilpa Rao and prolific Indian percussionist Vivek Rajgopalan. Two four-city live tours are planned for July and September 2009 in collaboration with VH1 and Carlsberg in India. The album "Live In Mumbai" is released as a limited edition collectors item including a bonus DVD with four live performances on video. > product detail
