Noir indeed!
This album is, for me, a lovely introduction to Etage Noir and Parov Stelar. It sounds great, fresh... and noir. Sometimes the music is a bit fractured but Rough Cuts is a 5 star album nonetheless.

Since the foundation of the label in 1996 it has always been the primary goal, to be open-minded and focussed at the same time. Klein always had the intent, to showcase the wide variety of a vital musicscene, whose members experiment with styles as well as create some new ones, while at it. It wasn't long until first success with critics and audiences came with the vienna-based Breakbeat/Dub-Collective SOFA SURFERS. Soon after followed the Electronica/Soul/House-Outfit MIKA, the Big Beat/Breakbeat-Soulster of MUM, Swiss Multitalent SEELENLUFT, Breakbeat/Dub/Ragga-Grandmaster Kevin Martin aka THE BUG and the solo-excursions in SoulDub of Sofa Surfer I-WOLF. And here is "Klein All Stars Vol.1": It's a place for rare, vinyl-only or not yet released tracks from the ever growing Klein Records artist roster. A showcase, planned for yearly release-dates, which should not only showcase the development of the label itself but also tendencies and new movements in contemporary music. Take-Away-Pop-Art, if you like. And please have a close look at the cover, Mr. Seelenluft aka Beat Solér put his musicmachines aside and picked up brush, paint and canvas for this extraordinary design.

Thanx to a friend of mine that owns a record store and proposed this CD to me, I'm very happy hearing the best album of the year! Nice production, unbeatable groove and nice tasty melodies... What more can we ask for? Can't wait for their next step!

Vienna-based label Cheap Records marks ten years of cutting-edge activities in new music. Founded in 1993 by renowned artists Patrick Pulsinger and Erdem Tunakan, Cheap Records has published more than 80 releases of significance to the contemporary musical scene while reflecting its roots in underground club culture. In celebration of very productive and challenging 10 years, the artists in the Cheap stable will be playing this year in various venues in Asia, South America and Europe. Originally founded as an act of resistance against the industrialization of music and the creative suppression of artists by major music publishers, the independent record label was a pioneer in nurturing the talents of young musicians in an unrestrictive environment. Cheap's experimental reputation quickly spread out of electronic music circles as it hosted legendary concerts and events, collaborated with artists such as Robert Hood or Mika Vaino and discovered new artists such as Twinnie, Quehenberger, Louie Austen etc. "Cheap is not only merely a record label. We help musicians with their productions by providing them with a full technical studio which normally only large music labels can afford. The 30th release out of the Sunshine Enterprise stable brings the vinyl business from the past 3 years to a broader audience. Carefully selected producers from all over the world took the originals from Nigel Hayes, Frankie Valentine, Madrid de los Austrias, Burdy and Karuan to another level. These fine artists put a lot of love & talent in those reinterpretations. There are no boundaries at Sunshine musically wise which is transparent on this cd collection. From broken to house & in between - it's all good. Cynic detail explaining this album's title: The coverart shows a very simple but charming original old skool beerhouse in Vienna just around the corner from the famous Sunshine studios with all the Sunshine crew hangin' out.
